In our computerized world, crime gets ever more conceptual… as with medical identity theft. This is a type of fraud that occurs when someone “steals” the identity of a person with health insurance and then uses his/her name — and, in the latest twist, insurance coverage — to get treatment that can include doctor visits, drugs and even hospital stays.

While insurance companies bear the financial brunt, this is by no means “not your problem.” If your medical identity is stolen, you and your family may pay a very high price. Your insurance coverage can get used up… unpaid bills can ravage your credit rating… and dangerous incorrect information can enter your medical files, making it difficult for health-care workers to accurately diagnose and treat you in the future — especially in emergencies when you might not have a chance to speak with them first.

There’s another kind of health insurance fraud that you have to be alert to as well — in which, appallingly, the criminal is your doctor. With this type of fraud, physicians may fabricate diagnoses… engage in a practice called “upcoding” (falsely billing for a higher-priced treatment than was provided)… or “unbundling” (billing each stage of treatment as if it were a separate procedure). These aren’t victimless crimes either — such fraud boosts the cost of health care, translating into higher premiums and out-of-pocket payments and reduced benefits or coverage.

Under the Radar

Health insurance fraud is a fast-growing and highly underreported type of white-collar crime, warns Eduard F. Goodman, JD, LLM, an expert in privacy and personal data protection law and chief privacy officer at Identity Theft 911, LLC in Scottsdale, Arizona. The most recent estimate from the National Health Care Anti-Fraud Association is that about 3% of annual health-care spending in the US goes down the drain in the form of fraud, resulting in costs of about $70 billion. Goodman told me that seniors, in particular, are frequent targets of health insurance fraud, especially Medicare schemes. Yet if this happens to you, you likely won’t even know — until perhaps much later when something weird occurs, like you get a collection notice in the mail for treatment you didn’t have or you are turned down for a loan because your credit rating plummeted due to unpaid medical debts incurred in your name by an imposter. Messes like these can take years to unravel.

How to Avoid Getting Ripped Off

Goodman and I discussed what might be some red flags that someone has stolen, or is trying to steal, your medical identity…

You are offered a “free” medical screening or equipment (such as a wheelchair, walker or diabetic supplies) — all you have to do is provide your Social Security number, Medicare information and/or health insurance policy number. Sometimes free medical offers are legitimate — for example, your community hospital may offer periodic free or discounted health screenings, such as mammograms or blood pressure tests. Be suspicious, however, of such offers at or near commercial settings such as shopping malls or health clubs — they may be “rolling lab” schemes in which scammers skip from mall to mall or gym to gym, administer tests (which may themselves be bogus), then bill them to your insurance or Medicare. And, as for that free wheelchair, why would a company simply give you medical equipment? Once an unscrupulous company has your signature, it can try to bill Medicare for equipment or services you do not need or do not receive.

You (and/or your insurance company) are charged for services that were not provided. Crooked physicians involve themselves in schemes to obtain “reimbursement” for medical visits you never made or tests you never had. They assume that you won’t look closely at your statements and that if you do, you won’t know one treatment from another. You can protect yourself by keeping careful records of all medical appointments and procedures and comparing them with statements from your doctor and insurer. If you detect a discrepancy, immediately contact your insurance company to challenge it. Many companies offer ways to report suspected fraud on their Web sites.

Victim-Proof Yourself

Goodman gave advice on how to minimize the likelihood that you will become a victim of health insurance fraud…

Request copies of your current medical files from all medical providers. You have a legal right to these documents under HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996). Carefully review them and correct any false or incorrect information.

Be careful with your Social Security, Medicare and insurance policy information — these are the tools thieves use to steal medical identities. Though you can do little to keep them from gaining access by hacking into a company’s database or breaking into a doctor’s office, you should protect this information in every way you can. Shred all documents with these numbers so that they can’t get them from your trash.A common trick: Calling and requesting a policy number or other private information because it is necessary “in order to process a payment or claim.” If someone wants your Social Security number or other such information, always ask why. Sometimes there are legitimate reasons — for instance, perhaps a hospital requires this information to be paid for treating you. In that event, verify that it is a legitimate request by asking for the caller’s name — then you can call the hospital and ask to speak to that person. If you discover that there’s no such person, promptly report the incident to your insurance company (as you should with any suspected fraud).

Never sign a blank insurance form. Fill out, sign and date only one claim form at a time. Giving blanket authorization to providers to bill for services can lead to overcharges and other abuses. Keep copies of all such forms.

Don’t agree to let your health-care provider keep your credit card number on file. When you conduct medical transactions online — such as refilling prescriptions or purchasing contact lenses — Goodman advises minimizing data exposure by typing in your information each time you order. When you trust your credit/debit card data to these institutions, you are also trusting that they are safeguarding it adequately, and all too often that is not the case.

Use care when disposing of confidential information since any private information can be used to get more. Shred ATM and credit card receipts and take security measures with stored paper documents, computers, iPods, PDAs, smart phones, computer printers and other electronic devices that can store personal data.

Do not assume that all is well because you don’t owe money. Once every few months, make a point of sitting down to compare your medical bills with the Explanation of Benefits (EOB) statements from your insurer. Follow up on any discrepancies, such as services you did not get, office visits you did not make or medical equipment you did not use.

Always scrutinize your monthly credit card statements, including health-care charges. Promptly report any unauthorized transactions to the issuer and any instance of suspected fraud to your insurer.

Monitor your credit report. Request a free copy from each of the three nationwide consumer credit-reporting agencies at least once a year and review it for suspicious entries. If you detect any, challenge them. If necessary, file a police report. To get your report, go to http://www.annualcreditreport.comor call 877-322-8228.

Good intentions for weight loss are wonderful. Like a whole lot of folks, I swore I would start to exercise more, go on a diet, and lose those extra pesky pounds for good. Months later, I’m still deciding on the ‘best’ diet for me, and paying the monthly gym dues for visits that I am ‘just about’ to get around to. What’s the hold up? I had the best of intentions to lose weight and keep it off. I never got started. According to the experts, I failed because I didn’t have a specific, workable, weight loss plan. Studies in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that people with firm action plans were more likely to engage in goal driven behavior, (eg.weight loss). In my case, I wanted to lose weight and start a healthier lifestyle. But as you can guess, this isn’t as easy as just writing down “Lose weight and exercise more”, and sticking it on the bathroom mirror.

Developing an action plan is a process you must go through, really think about, clearly visualizing what you want. By answering the following questions, you can create your own weight loss and exercise action plan.

What are my goals? What, exactly, do I want to achieve? Get those ideas out of your head and on to paper. That helps to make them concrete and doable. Who doesn’t like checking off lists when they get done?

There are five specific things you should keep in mind when writing down all of your weight loss goals:

1. Make your goals specific. Don’t say you ‘need to lose weight’ or I’m ‘going to lose weight’, say you will do it. For example: “I will lose 15 lbs and take a walk every evening.”

2. Make your excercise and weight loss goals measurable and specific. ‘I’ll walk on the treadmill three times a week for a half hour at a speed of 3.5 miles an hour’.

3. Write down your chosen goals. Create both short term and long term goals for losing weight. Keep a chart or journal to track progress and give yourself some encouragement as you reach your weight loss milestones.

4. Set deadlines. Make your weight loss goals not only measurable, but time specific. Set your weight and exercise goals realistically. It’s hard to pursue goals that can never be attained. Unrealistic goals that never seem to be reached can add to your stress level.

5. Give yourself emotional reasons for continuing to lose weight. What moves you to action? Imagine your feelings when you succeed. What will your reward for achievement be? Write it down and plan for it.

When should you begin? How about right now! It’s decision time. You can continue to dream about a healthier life style, starting to lose weight and looking better, or you can do something about it today. You can stay stuck in your rut, or you can make a change. You can put off your happiness until another day, or you can begin doing positive things now, that you know you are capable of doing.

The choice is yours. It’s easy to fall into the trap of ‘someday.’ Someday I’ll lose those extra pounds, but right now I have so many other things to take care o’f. The truth is, you will always have things to take care of, people to see, and places to go. You have to make time for a better life for yourself because you are worth it.

Now that you know how to set up a specific, goal oriented, weight loss action plan, there is nothing stopping you!

Web Site promotion should be the major part of your web site
marketing plan. It’s not enough just to design a beautiful web
site and put in on the Net. Promoting your web site has to be
done constantly if you want to get a continuous stream of
traffic to it. If you don’t drive traffic to your web site, your
online business venture will soon fail.

1. Create a web site marketing plan – if you fail to plan then
you default to a plan for failure. When designing your web site,
create a plan on how to market it as well. Try to put yourself
in your customers shoes when doing this. It’s too easy to just
view your web site from your own perspective. You need to have a
clear vision for your business, goals (short and long term) you
wish to achieve and the strategies of how you will accomplish
them.

2. Define your target market – many online marketers promote
their web site aimlessly in a field which is too large i.e. they
may use bulk mailing as one of their promotion strategies. Of
course you may get some visitors but the chances are you will
not make many sales. Why? You have not narrowed your field of
customers and targeted them. If you sold Cadillacs online for
instance, you are not randomly going to market to every person
on the Net. Your target market may be previous owners of
cadillacs, or people who routinely purchase luxury American
cars.

Getting targeted customers to your web site, will increase sales,
because they will have more interest in your product or service
than marketing to a general audience.

3. Use several promotion strategies – don’t just stick to one
form of promotion because you never know which one will work the
best for you. If you use many channels i.e. search engines,
email marketing, forums, writing articles etc you have a greater
chance of getting more traffic to your web site.

4. Promote continuously – if you want to drive constant traffic
to your web site, you must promote it continuously. Web traffic
is the lifeblood of your online business. For example, you could
constantly optimize your web pages for the search engines,
resubmit them if needed, visit discussion forums every day and
write an article for online publications every two weeks.

5. Calculate your return on investment (ROI) – this means
keeping track of how much money you invested in your marketing
plan and what profit you received in return. This will avoid
wasting large sums of money thrown aimlessly into advertising.

If you calculate it takes 100 visitors to your web site to
generate one sale and with each sale you make $10, then you
shouldn’t spend more than 10 cents to get each targeted visitor
and still make a profit.

In order to know which aspects of your marketing campaign bring
the most visitors, you must be able to monitor visitor activity
to your web pages.

6. Analyze your web site traffic – by analyzing your web site
traffic, you can determine what marketing strategies are
successful. You can then change them as necessary, to boost the
sales or services from your site.

Your analysis may include what keywords your visitors are using
to find your web site, which web pages are the most popular and
where your visitors are coming from. These are essential
statistics you should know, instead of blindly promoting your
web site and hoping for the best.

7. Test, monitor and track your results – to run an effective
online marketing campaign, you need to constantly test what
works and what doesn’t. Tracking the response to an ad may cause
you to refine it until it generates a great return on the money
you invested. Once your results are satisfactory, you can then
roll out your ads on a larger scale and spend greater sums of
money.

You should also monitor your site in the search engines, so you
can optimize your web pages for higher search engine rankings.
This will attract more visitors which leads to higher profits.

Web site promotion strategies will differ for everyone, and will
depend a lot on your product, web site and your personality. Try
everything you can, record the results, and see what works for
you.

Whether you are just getting started or are an experienced eBay Power Seller, having an eBay Store is a wonderful way to reach potential customers you may not get through eBay auctions.

Here are some benefits having an eBay Store can provide your business:

1. More Profits – According to eBay, sellers with eBay Stores see an average of 25% increase in their total sales within three months of opening store. You will also save on listing fees since store fees are significantly lower than auction fees on eBay. EBay also offers storeowners promotional offers and free subscriptions to some of its services.

2. Regular Customers – People who buy from your eBay Store are more likely to turn into regular customers if you provide excellent customer service after the sale.

3. Professionalism and Credibility – A professional looking eBay Store makes you look more professional as an on-line seller. An image of professionalism adds to your credibility in customer’s minds. As an added benefit, an eBay Store gives you access to eBay’s Business Resource Center, where you can download templates for professional looking business cards and much more.

4. Save Time – eBay Store special features, such as longer listing periods and automatic re-listing, will save you time.

5. You Have Your Own Website – When you open an eBay Store you have a unique
URL you can promote both on and off eBay. Your eBay Store will be picked up by
search engines just like other websites are.

6. You Can Personalize Your eBay Store – With eBay store customization features you can control the look and feel of your store. You can create up to 20 categories to fit your individual inventory. Buyers will see what you want them to see, how you want them to see it.

7. Your eBay Store Has It’s Own Search Engine – Include your own Search box in your store and buyers will be able to find exactly what they are looking for when they are in the buying mood.

8. Special Promotional Tools – With an eBay Store you can cross promote other items you choose to buyers and you can choose what items to cross promote. You also get access to eBay Stores Email Marketing Tool – a great way to keep in touch with your customers. Additionally, if your store qualifies, you receive free monthly eBay Keyword listings.

9. Free Monthly Reporting – All storeowners receive free monthly sales reports that recap your sales activity by category. You get information such as monthly gross sales, conversion rates, number of buyers, etc. Plus, if you have a Featured or Anchor Store, you receive overall eBay marketplace data to benchmark your sales against other eBay sellers. With Accounting Assistant, you can export date from your eBay and PayPal accounts directly into QuickBooks.

Recently, while checking our company web site statistics, we noticed a number of referrals from gambling and pornography sites. Since we are certain these types of sites would not house links to us, we investigated further and determined that some of our faithful visitors may be the victims of adware or spyware.

What is adware?

Adware, in it’s most sinister incarnation, is a program that runs on your computer (like a virus) and occassionally pops up ads or redirects your browser to websites you had not chosen to visit.

What is spyware?

Spyware is software that collects personal information from you without your knowledge or permission. The information spyware collects can range from all the web sites you visit to sensitive information including user names and passwords.

How can I make sure I don’t get these on my computer?

* Never download programs or files from a website you don’t know and trust.
* Never open email attachments unless you know what they are. If you receive an email from a friend, but the text is strange and you don’t know what the attachment is do not open it. Write to your friend and make sure they sent the email.
* Keep an antivirus program running on your computer at all times.

Studies done by Jakob Nielson the man touted as the, “King of usability” by Internet Magazine showed that people do not read on the web like they would normally read offline.

So what does this mean to you and why should you care?

Visitors to your web sites are in a rush, they want the information you promised and they want it NOW.

If they don’t get the information they want they will leave and this means you lose the sale, the opt-in or whatever action you want the visitor to take while at your site.

The following 3 tips will help you give your visitors what they want and in a way that will increase your web sites usability.

1. Concise Text

By keeping your paragraphs down to one single idea you can help speed up how your visitor absorbs your information.

For example, instead of:

“In today’s market place many people tend to become overwhelmed with the over hyped and highly charged writing that most web sites employ to gain visitors business. This causes people to be turned off by the sites language and ultimately they will click the back button on their browser and leave.”

Why not say,

“Today more than ever people are turned off by over hyped marketing language of websites they visit and because of this frustration they will end up leaving your site.”

See how that short, to the point paragraph says the same thing but quicker?

Go through your home page first and take out long, multiple thought paragraphs and edit them down to be precise. One idea per paragraph once you finish your thought (in 3-4 lines) start another paragraph.

2. Scannable Text

Web site users do not read online text. They scan it.

Use short bold text, for example in the form of a hyperlink, to make important information stick out from the page.

Bullet lists are an invaluable tool as well. Put your important sets of words in bullets. For example instead of,

“You will learn how to create your own web site, design pages that load faster, pick the right color scheme, and improve your sites navigation.”

Use this,

“You will learn:

How to create your own web site

Design pages that load faster

Pick the right color scheme

And improve your sites navigation.”

Use Subheadings through out the page.

As you go through your pages pick out the important points and put them in heading tags. Heading 2 and 3 work the best but the heading 1 tag will also work.

This will break the page up for the reader and they will be able to get the information they want simply by scanning your pages.

3. Be Objective

Far to many web sites are “me” oriented. In other words your site is about making money for you and you want your visitor to stay at your site and buy from you.

So what do you do?

You force them to stay at your site even if they are not interested in your product or service any longer.

Doing this only serves to damage your reputation and cause visitors to leave with a bad taste in their mouth.

Being objective means putting links to other related sites through out your web pages and allowing the visitor the free will to either stay at your site or leave and find the information they are looking for somewhere else.

In the end this is not a bad thing because you, as the site owner, can direct them to the sites you want them to go to.

However, seeding your pages with a bunch of recommendations to other sales sites is not the smartest way to do this.

Offer them free information along with sites that you receive compensation from as well.

This way you are being objective and offering your visitor valuable information they can use at the same time.

In Conclusion

Take a few days and walk through your web site and find the long paragraphs and make them more concise.

Bold important text, create subheadings for extremely important points and create more bullet lists where needed.

Finally, add more out bound links to your information and show them you are objective and care about their needs.

Internet users are getting tired of the hype and they are speaking out with their browser’s back button.

By taking the time to make these changes you will improve your sites usability and your visitors will thank you for it by doing business with you.

Like all plans, there is an ultimate goal to achieve. The goal in a business continuity plan is simply that: to continue your business in the face of a disaster or a disruption. A business continuity plan is not just for a disaster. It’s also for the smaller things in life, like your friendly neighborhood burglar who decides to borrow all of your computers or the small power interruption, which causes loss of data and downtime or the fire five floors below you, which causes a 5 hour building shutdown. These are a few of the many things, which do occur every day and do happen to companies like yours.

Disaster recovery has traditionally been associated with computing systems and data storage and recovery of data. Different than business continuity, disaster recovery is focused more on after the fact, quickly and effectively recovering from a disaster or disruption.

There are many good sources of information on both business continuity and disaster recovery. Some of the more authoritative sources are: Disaster Recovery International (www.drii.org), Disaster Recovery Journal (www.drj.com).

It’s, of course, not realistic to think that you can guard against every risk. However, through risk analysis, business impact analysis, selecting effective strategies, documenting detailed recovery plans and testing your plans, you can significantly reduce many of your risks, often in a very cost effective way. You have an important management responsibility to safeguard company assets. Reducing your risk profile through a well thought out business continuity and disaster recovery plan is an effective way to do so.

Multiculturalism is a reality in North America and for those of us who do business globally. The US has more legal immigrants yearly than all the other countries in the world combined. Also there are vast cultural differences among “native” North Americans living in the US and Canada for several generations, as you know if you’ve done business with a New Yorker (better be quick!) or with a Texan (better stand at a 90degree angle to your male companion). Culture is not ethnic or racial. It is learned and of course each culture is different. Treat everyone like a unique individual, as you would like to be treated, don’t get hung up on stereotypes. Develop your emotional intelligence so you can be more intuitive about how to communicate with, negotiate with, and provide services and products for people from cultural backgrounds other than your own. I offer some tips below, and yet they are not universal in these cultures.

1. I repeat, do not expect everyone in a culture to be the same!

2. In South Texas, if you’re talking to a male, they will often stand at a 90 degree angle to you.

If you move to reorient, a “dance” will begin. This is a markedly non-intimate position, and often the eyes are cast down to the floor or out across the floor. South Texans generally say “Pleased to know you,” while Mid Westerners say, “Pleased to meet you” or “Pleased to make your acquaintance.” In social settings in South Texas, it is not customary to shake hands with women. Other San Antonio cultural customs — in San Antonio society, we have the haute hug – two women will parody a hug, not touching any part of their bodies, and just patting one another lightly on the back. As a sign of affection, when you shake hands, sometimes you cover the other person’s hand with your left hand and pat or squeeze with warm eye contact. This is particularly done with respected older people.

3. Be aware that most of the world does not greet by shaking hands.

4. People from Asian cultures bow in greeting, but the bows are different.

People from Cambodia and Laos bow with both hands together in front of the chest, as if praying. In Japan, the depth of the bow signifies the level of respect for the other party. Many Koreans prefer bowing and if they shake hands, the right hand is supported at the wrist by the left hand to show respect. Thais bow with palms together about chest-high with their fingers outstretched. And, there are exceptions. The Taiwanese usually nod the head in recognition rather than bow.

5. Some cultures naturally greet by hugging.

Native Hawaiians hug each other, exchanging breaths. The custom is called “ha.” Ancient Hawaiians, incidentally, actually bumped heads together. Mexicans use the abrazo. Greeks and Italians often hug with or without shaking hands first.

6. Some cultures kiss!

If your Cuban male client kisses you on the cheek, you know you’ve made the short list. Immigrant men from the Middle East often shake hands with a slight nod or bow and then exchange kisses on both cheeks. Men from the Middle East usually don’t shake hands with women, nor do they introduce the woman with them. Do not attempt to shake hands with a Middle Eastern woman unless — and here’s where the EQ comes in — she extends her hand to you. Men in Eastern Europe, Portugal, Spain and Italy will often kiss male friends on the cheek.

7. Pakistanis (largely Muslims) greet with salaam, which is the equivalent of our “hello.”

The salaam is done by bowing with the palm of the right hand on the forehead. Salaam means “peace” or “Peace be with you.”

8. Postures also have meaning.

Ready to settle in with your Middle Eastern client? You may be most comfortable sitting back in your chair and crossing your legs. Well, don’t! In the Middle East, one of the most insulting things you can do is sit with your legs crossed so the bottoms of the feet are pointed in the other person’s direction. The foot is the dirtiest part of the body and the sole of the shoe is the dirtiest of the low. To show someone the bottom of your foot or shoe means you’re looking for a fight!

9. Even handshaking cultures do it differently.

Many Britian’s prefer a brief but firm handshake. The French prefer a light grip while sharing a single gentle shake that’s quickly withdrawn. Germans will give a very firm handshake — just one “pump” then quick withdrawal. More than one shake with Germans or French is considered aggressive. Italians will shake hands and then hug friends or kiss them on both cheeks.

10. Bear in mind the other person may be trying to accommodate your culture, so don’t assume they will use their traditional greeting.

For example, if you start first, for instance bowing, and then see a hand extended for a shake, and switch to that, the other person will then have switched to a bow and this becomes awkward. For many cultures such “awkwardness” will kill the relationship early on, which means the deal is off.

11. Greetings are critical first moves in relationships.

Begin with a polite word or two, such as “Mr. and Mrs. Takida, it’s so nice to meet you at last,” and then hesitate for a moment to see what they want to do and are comfortable with. Then mirror their gesture, be it bow, hand shake, abrazo (hug) or nothing! Use your intuition! When in doubt, err on the side of conservatism.

I look forward to the day when we abandon our collective need for safety through homogeneity and reclaim our natural curiosity about what is not like us. We then will no longer need to “manage” diversity, and will have no need other than to engage it and open ourselves to receive its gifts.

Every newer technology has loopholes that draw multitudes of Spammers. The newest Spam technique on the scene is hiding text and URL gateways using CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) methods.

More frequently we are finding top listed sites owned or controlled by SEO and Web Development companies using this technique.

There are many ways to hide text and links using CSS and it is seems to be running completely unchecked by the major SE’s at this time. Up to now the search engines haven’t been able to parse CSS files and combine that information with the page code to determine if spamming techniques were being used.

Most methods deploy a separate attached CSS file and use “hide” terms, such as:

keyword keyword

This morning I was doing a GOOGLE search for “web development pricing” and found a Site in top positions using a similar technique to hide hundreds of links to pseudo URLs with a full spectrum of web design, development and promotion key terms. Each page was the same “gateway” page.

Obviously, the links were hidden in microscopic detail, utilizing the smallest text possible and CSS color the same as the background. Of course this method required very little space at the bottom of the page after the layout table for hundreds of links.

The search engines thrive on “relevance” to maintain market share. Almost every algorithm shift targets Spam, filtering out anything irrelevant possible. Recent Search Engine history is replete with algorithm updates that severely punished Sites and Site Owners that chose to deploy similar “Black Hat” Search Engine Optimization techniques.

Why do so many flock to new “Black Hat” SEO techniques every time another one surfaces?

These practices are strictly forbidden in the top 3 SE’s published “Webmaster” and “Site Owner” guidelines.

It shouldn’t be very difficult for the Search Engine developers to take in external CSS file considerations and incorporate them into algorithm changes in the near future. With the extent CSS is being misused now, we should expect an update correcting this problem in the near future.

I highly recommend that anyone using CSS techniques to SPAM, on their or client’s Sites immediately desist. Site owners hold ultimate responsibility for what occurs on their Site. Site owners should immediately check with your Webmaster, Website Marketing or SEO company to make sure they are not deploying CSS Spam techniques on their Site, to protect themselves in this coming update. Many small business owners do not have the time or the knowledge to manage their own Sites.

In past updates, many business owners suddenly found that their Site had been completely de-listed or de-rated so severely that it cost them their livelihood. Small business owners are so busy managing the daily affairs of their business, they have to hire outside professionals foe web development, marketing etc. If you fall in that category make sure and read what GOOGLE has to say about SEO: http://www.google.com/webmasters/seo.html

Another very real and present danger to “Black Hat” SEO practices is; When Sites using dubious methods gain top positions, competing “White Hat” Webmasters and Site Owners checking their own positions find unfair positioning, they tend to report the Spam directly to the Search Engine. This method of reporting Spam Sites has become very effective for “White Hat” webmasters and the Search Engines alike. GOOGLE even states that such reports are used in ongoing development and refinement of their algorithms. Many are reviewed and even banned. Spam reported through these channels are valuable to Search Engine administrators, saving a great deal of algorithm research and development expenditure. You bet they listen.

We support reporting Sites deploying Spam methods to:

Google @ http://www.google.com/contact/spamreport.html
MSN @ At the bottom of every SERP, select the “Help us improve” link.
Yahoo @ http://add.yahoo.com/fast/help/us/ysearch/cgi_reportsearchspam
Excite @ http://mailit.excite.com/mailit/feedback_abuse.jsp
DMOZ @ staff@dmoz.org

Know your and your client’s competition in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages). If a competitive Site’s listing doesn’t look right, examine the code and determine how and why they beat you in the SERPs.

Whilst tests measuring the creative or innovative personality exist, there are a number of inherent flaws. Some are noted below:

a) Whether a creative or innovative type exists at all is highly contentious. Creativity can be defined as problem identification and idea generation – universal abilities. Creativity can be defined as producing a number of ideas, a number of diverse ideas and a number of novel ideas – universal abilities. Traits are not stable or transferable across situations. Motivation is a critical factor.

b) Due to the numerous relevant definitions of creativity and innovation, it is clear that a number of differing and distinct competencies are involved. It is unlikely (or rare) that all competencies are present in single individual.

c) Creativity is a cognitive process and case dependent. Not all people produce equal quantities of ideas across tasks and, importantly, the same people do not produce equal quantities of ideas across tasks.

d) Too many assumptions are made. Some have been indicated : the assumption that creativity and innovation are stable and transferable across situations ; motivation and competencies are not accounted for etc etc etc.

f) Collaboration, networking and such are ignored. Intellectual cross pollination results in a higher degree of creative output than is produced by individuals alone.

g) The generalisability, variability and reliability of the test paramters can be disputed.
