In this year of 2002, we Americans have been
warned we are over weight. Those warnings are
saying that the increase in obesity is almost
at the level of smoking as far as a preventable
cause of death.
One study said that the number of overweight
adults is at 60% or more. In other words, a
fit or thin person is in the minority.
As for children, articles mentioned that in
prior studies it took 30 years for the
prevalence of overweight children to double.
In the present time frames the time it takes to
double the number of overweight children is now
down to 12 years.
It shows that with recent technology things
just happen faster whether it is good or bad.
Instead of playing outside and doing physical
activities, kids are now playing video games
and sitting down watching activities instead of
doing something.
Another fact indicates that the number of days
and time spent in physical education is dwindling
and the result of inactivity has led to an
increase in overweight and obese children.
Eating habits are changed. No one has time to
eat right now. It seems that food classified
as junk food or fast food is now the majority
of meals eaten by people. I doubt that many of
our children know what a real potato tastes like.
Some eat at their jobs or try to catch a snack
as they drive through the fast food places. Kids
love little trinkets given to them at most fast
food places. This is a ploy to get you there.
These changes add up to a real problem in
overweight Americans.
Some time ago it was thought that as you got older,
you automatically gained weight. We now know
that is not the case. Most older Americans,
just need to adjust their intake.
This can change with awareness, education, and a
sensible eating plan.
